The popular GI Tagged rice Black Nunia is popular as the ‘Prince of Rice’. The rice variety has seen a steady increase in its cultivation and increased sales after securing the GI Tag. Farmers in Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal, are showing enthusiasm in sowing this popular variety which is followed by the continuous assistance of the agriculture department.

The ‘Prince of Rice’ is one of the most sought-after rice varieties popularly known for its aromatic black husk and grain. Besides being good in taste, this popular variety of rice is also the preferred choice for khichdi and payas (payasam) for those belonging from Nort Bengal.
The Bengali month of Poush sees the consumption of Black Nunia in various forms and is also a must during the Durga Puja festival.
Increase in Price and Sales After GI Tag
Ever since it has gained GI Tag in 2024, farmers have positively reacted to the decision by the agriculture department and showed their interest in Black Nunia Rice. Last year, this variety was cultivated in 1300 hectares of land in the Jalpaiguri district. This has now increased to 1500 hectares of land. The district is now producing 2800 to 3000 tonnes of Black Nunia.
Since the rice variety takes longer time for ripening and attracts herds of elephants owing to its attracting smell farmers showed little interest in growing this variety of rice. However, since it has gained the GI tag production has significantly increased followed by the selling price. Black Nunia is being sold at Rs 100 to Rs 120 per kg at the stalls of Sufal Bangla. It is also being exported to other states.
