ITR Filing 2025: File Income Tax Returns by September 15 to Avoid Fine

September 6, 2025

The government has extended the ITR Filing 2025 deadline for taxpayers including individuals, Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs), Associations of Persons (AOPs), and Bodies of Individuals (BOIs) who are not required to get their accounts audited. Notably, government shifted the due date of 31st July to 15 September on receiving complaints related to technical glitches and late release of update forms.

In this context, the Income Tax Department cleared that the extension of the due date was aimed at easing pressure on taxpayers facing problems with the ITR portal. The request to extend the date was made by several chartered associations including those from Surat and Karnataka as well.

In Case You Miss the New ITR Filing Last Date 2025

Taxpayers who fail to meet the ITR Filing Last Date 2025 have still got the chance to file a belated return by 31st December 2025. However, the belated return attracts penalties under Section 234F—₹5,000 for income above ₹5 lakh and ₹1,000 for income below ₹5 lakh. Further, an interest at 1% per month on taxable income for each month of delay will also be levied under Section 234A.

Condonation Of Delay in Case of Genuine Hardship

There may be instances where a taxpayer misses to file their ITR or e-verify it within the ITR Filing deadline for any genuine reason. In such case the taxpayer is given an option to submit a condonation of delay request. A condonation of delay request under Section 119(2)(b) allows a taxpayer to file their ITR without any additional tax, interest or penalty.

Once the condonation of delay request is accepted, the taxpayer can file their Income Tax Return after the deadline.

Method to Raise a Condonation of Delay Request

Step 1: Log in to the Income Tax e-filing portal homepage: https://eportal.incometax.gov.in
Step 2: Go to the dashboard, under “services”, click on “condonation request”
Step 3: Fill application for statutory forms and click on the “Create Condonation Request” button to proceed.

ITR Filing Progress in 2025

As of early September, approx. 4.56 crore returns have been filed for AY 2025-26, which is significantly lower than last year’s figures during the same period. However, the same is expected to increase as the last date of September 15 approaches. Experts in this context advise individuals to download Form 16, verify TDS details, and file at the earliest to avoid last-minute chaos.
