Indonesia To Halt Rice Imports Next Year

Indonesia will halt rice imports for either consumption or industrial use next year, mentioning sufficient domestic production, a government official said.
The decision was declared following a recent ministerial coordination meeting in Jakarta attended by senior leaders from the Coordinating Ministry for Food Security, the Ministry of Trade, and the Central Statistics Agency.

Domestic demand fully met by local production, no need for rice imports

Tatang Yuliono, deputy for Trade and Distribution Coordination at the Coordinating Ministry for Food Security, stated that all domestic demand, such as rice for household consumption and industrial processing, will be fully met by local production. Not only this, the government has also dismissed the proposal by the Ministry of industry to do rice import of nearly 381,000 tons for industrial use in 2026, finding domestic supply will be sufficient.

Moreover, he added that relevant ministries will continue reviewing food import policies via upcoming commodity balance meetings. Indonesia’s confidence generates from strong agricultural performance in 2025, when the country stopped rice imports and corn imports, setting milestone in national food security.

Rice production is expected to reach 34.77 million tons

According to official data, rice production in 2025 is expected to reach 34.77 million tons, an increase of 13.54% year on year, driven by favourable weather and farmer support policies under President Prabowo Subianto’s administration. Corn output is also projected to reach around 4 million tons by this year’s end, ensuring that sufficient supply for domestic consumption and the poultry sector.


Rice production is forecast to decline to 11.25 million hectares

Although, the rice production is forecast to decline to 11.25 million hectares and 52.6 million tonnes, respectively, in 2025-26 from 11.4 million hectares and 53.7 million tonnes earlier. The government of Indonesia, however, has clearly stated that no questions and speculations related to Indonesia’s rice import will be entertained as the nations has ample supply from local production. The nation will not issue any authorization for Indonesian National Logistics Agency (BULOG) to import rice, other than specialty varieties, in 2025-26, according to the FAS. The statement by the government further ensured food security for all in the nation, where rice is the staple food.
