India Cotton Production Likely to Fall in 2025-26, Imports and Exports Also Seen Lower

Cotton production in India is likely to be lower this year. Imports and exports are also expected to decline. The Cotton Production and Consumption Committee (CCPC), a body representing all stakeholders in the textile sector, released this preliminary estimate at its review meeting on Monday.

Decrease in both cotton production and cotton imports

According to the CCPC, cotton production in the new cotton season (October 2025 – September 2026) is estimated at 292.15 lakh bales (170 kg each). This is lower than the 297.24 lakh bales produced in the previous season. The committee’s estimate is in line with the Ministry of Agriculture’s first advance estimate. Not only with cotton production, but cotton imports are also projected to decrease. The committee has estimated cotton imports at 40 lakh bales this season, compared to 41.4 lakh bales last year. However, this estimate is significantly different from the Cotton Association of India‘s forecast, which predicted record imports of 50 lakh bales.

Impact on cotton exports and closing stock

The committee has also projected a decline in cotton exports this season. Cotton exports are expected to be 15 lakh bales, compared to 18 lakh bales last year. The decrease in both cotton production and cotton imports will directly impact the closing stock at the end of the year. The closing stock is estimated to fall from 45.50 lakh bales last year to 40.65 lakh bales. Meanwhile, cotton consumption by mills is expected to remain almost stable at around 213 lakh bales.
