Karnataka Declares 1,777 Acres in Devanahalli as Special Agricultural Zone, Ensures Farmers’ Rights

December 10, 2025

The Karnataka government has declared 1,777 acres of land spread across 13 villages in Devanahalli taluk, Karnataka, as a permanent Special Agricultural Zone. This decision follows a long-standing dispute between farmers and the state government over land earlier earmarked for an aerospace park. This move is being considered a significant step towards protecting agricultural land, maintaining it for genuine agricultural use, and strengthening the rural economy.

What did the government say about Special Agricultural Zone?

The Karnataka government has clarified that despite the declaration of the Special Agricultural Zone, there is no restriction on the sale of farmers’ land. The government dismissed rumors that a ban has been imposed on the sale of farmers’ land. Dr. S. Selvakumar, Principal Secretary of the Industries Department, stated that some quarters were spreading misinformation. He stated that this decision was taken in deference to the wishes of the farmers, as farmers in these 13 villages had requested that their land be kept reserved for agricultural purposes. Moreover, he said: “The farmers clearly expressed their desire to have their land used exclusively for agriculture. The government took this positively and made a decision accordingly. There has been no curtailment of farmers’ rights. Our aim is to ensure that the land is not misused by real estate developers and farmers are not exploited.”

Agricultural development will receive a boost

The government says that this land had already been declared a green zone. Now, it has been formally registered as an agricultural area, allowing farmers to better benefit from infrastructure, market access, and government schemes. The state government will soon form a committee to study states and countries where special agricultural zones are already in place. These include Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, and Maharashtra. The government aims to promote agriculture-based economy, agri-processing, Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), food processing units and rural entrepreneurship.
