On Tuesday, December 10, Nepal’s Minister for energy, water resources, and irrigation Kul Man Ghising urged India to enable power exports of an additional 20 mega watts of electricity to Bangladesh using India’s transmission infrastructure. Notably, Nepal has been doing power exports of 40 MW of electricity to Bangladesh from June 15 to November 15 each year since last year, under the tripartite agreement between Nepal, India and Bangladesh. The request has been done during his meeting with Munu Mahawar, Additional Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs of India.
Nepal’s power exports in line with an agreement
Nepal’s power exports are in line with an agreement Nepal reached with Bangladesh at a time when a meeting of the energy-secretary-level joint steering Committee was held in Dhaka in late November. According to the bilateral agreement, Bangladesh would buy an additional 40 MW of electricity from Nepal after completing the necessary process. Not only this, according to Nepali officials, more power exports to Bangladesh through the existing transmission infrastructure, provided India gives a green light to use its transmission infrastructure. Nonetheless, they say they are not sure about how India would respond, given the strained ties between India and Bangladesh since last year, when the ousted Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina fled to India following a violent revolt against her rule in Bangladesh.
Urge for the power exports approval every year
Apart from this, Minister Ghising urged India to remove the existing requirement that Nepal must renew approval for power exports to India’s Day Ahead and Real time markets, and instead make a one- time approval permanently valid. Both sides also discussed several problems facing by the power projects developed by Indian companies. Besides this, Minister Ghising said that necessary coordination and facilitation are being initiated by his ministry and Investment Board Nepal to resolve issues regarding to use of forest land for the 669MW lower Arun and 900 MW 3 projects.
