India Secures Second Position In Global Tea Exports: Govt. Unveils 1,000 Crore Support For Tea Workers

Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal has recently stated that India secures the second position in global tea exports, along with the tea production of approximately 255 million tonnes annually. Addressing the gathering at the National Conference on Safe Tea Production in New Delhi, he further said that the government has announced a 1,000-crore package and initiatives like the Chai Sahyog App for the welfare of labour in the tea industry.

He mentioned that the government’s commitment to harnessing the best testing facilities to make the tea industry a significant sector for Viksit Bharat 2047. Furthermore, Minister Goyal said that the country must develop new internationally competitive tea varieties to sustain the Indian tea standards. He mentioned that sustainable and innovative farming practices need to be adopted for the skills of small tea farmers.

Goyal mentions adopting sustainable practices

The Minister stated that the industry must emphasize the value addition of marketing tea to expand the product range in both domestic and international markets. Not only this, he appealed to researchers and scientists to leverage India’s diverse agro-climate strengths to generate Innovative varieties and high–value products, opening new export opportunities.
Additionally , he mentioned that India’s tea sector must adopt sustainable practices, ensuring responsible labour standards and boost traceability systems to maintain high-quality tea in the country. He underscored the requirement for complete traceability in the tea supply chain and focused on the integrity of Indian tea that must be protected at every stage, from plucking and processing to packaging and tea exports.
