Indonesian Govt. Opens Probe After Illegal Rice Import

Taking strict action over illegal rice import, the Indonesian government has opened a probe to trace those behind the illegal entry of 250 tonnes of rice imports from Thailand to Sabang, Aceh. The illegal import of 250 tonnes of rice is a serious breach of the national food import policy under President Prabowo Subianto. Notably, Indonesian President announced a rice import ban as per the president Indonesia as of now does not need to import rice due to its large reserves and projected production of 34.8 million tons in 2025. 

In this context, the Agriculture Minister Amran Sulaiman said that the receiving warehouse has been sealed, and investigation order is requested to find out the people behind the breach of the national food import policy. The minister further said that any violation by government officials will result in immediate removal of those found to have permitted rice import. Furthermore, the government has also ordered to check into other rice imports that might have occurred in other parts of Indonesia.

Indonesia Rice Figures

According to the Statistics Indonesia BPS), domestic rice production is projected to reach 34.7 million tonnes this year, the highest level since 2019. Rice reserves stored at Bulog warehouses currently stand at 3.8 million tonnes, which is also a record high. Further the 2025 Rice Balance Projection of the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) expects the total volume of reserves to reach 12.89 million tonnes by the start of next year.

 Amidst this, the Provincial Food Balance Projection for Aceh shows a rice surplus of 871,400 tonnes, with available stock at 1.53 million tonnes and consumption demand of 667,700 tonnes. Sabang has a projected surplus of 970 tonnes, with 5,911 tonnes of rice available to meet 4,940 tonnes of demand.
