India has reduced its Russian oil imports which is exactly what Donald Trump wants. However, experts say that India has already been implementing an import strategy to reduce dependence on oil imports from Russia. The same was confirmed by government officials as well. Now turning to the figures, the amount of oil purchased by India from Russia has significantly decreased in November. Further, Russian crude oil shipments to India have fallen significantly so far in November to about 948,000 barrels per day, down 50% from 1.89 million bpd in October. Though this decrease in Russian crude oil imports may further strengthen India US relations it is likely to have impact on Russia India relations as well.
This decline in global oil trade is mainly attributed to US President Donald Trump’s sanctions on two of Russia’s biggest oil majors – Rosneft and Lukoil which came into effect on November 21, 2025. The Trump administration announced sanctions alleging that their financial contributions support Moscow’s military operations in Ukraine. Followed by Trumps’ sanctions on Rosneft and Lukoil from Nov. 21, India, China, Türkiye and Brazil have started cutting oil purchases from Russia. Global oil trade is likely to see a turmoil with major countries cutting oil purchases from Russia. Even though US Tariffs on India may not have disturbed India Russian oil trade but the sanctions on Russian oil majors may have the desired result that US wants. If news sources are to be believed, America is preparing to impose 500 percent tariff on those countries which buy crude oil from Russia. Meanwhile, amid ongoing discussions between India and Russia on oil trade, Russian Ambassador to India Denis Alipov claimed that Russia remains the largest supplier of oil to India with more than 30% market share. Further, experts also suggest it is quite impossible for India to completely ban the import of Russian crude oil.
