Telangana CM wants nationwide distribution of fine rice through PDS

Highlighting the distribution of fine rice to ration card holders as a major success, Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has urged the Union Minister for consumer affairs, food and public distribution, Pralhad Joshi, to consider implanting the distribution of super fine rice across the country. In this context, the union minister said that a comprehensive study would be conducted before a decision is made on distribution of fine rice through public distribution system in India.

Notably, public distribution system is is a government-run system in India that provides essential commodities like food grains, sugar, and kerosene at subsidized prices to the poor and marginalized sections of society through a network of fair price shops (FPSs). Telangana CM Revanth during his meeting with the Union Minister said that the state is uniquely distributing fine rice through ration shops, which has reduced PDS rice recycling and stabilized prices in the open market. He suggested that the central govt should consider adopting a similar system nationwide.

What is Public Distribution System?

Aadhaar enabled public distribution system provides subsidized food and essential goods to the poor. In nations like India which is the largest exporter of rice PDS schemes highlights the focus of government towards ensuring food security for all.

Apart from requesting government for implementation of fine rice through PDS schemes in India, Revanth also requested that the Centre increase the boiled rice quota by an additional one million metric tonnes for the 2024-25 Rabi season, release a subsidy of 1,468 crore related to levy rice supplied under the PDS, and release the pending subsidy of 343.27 crore for the fifth phase of Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY). Revanth further requested an increase in the paddy procurement target to 8 million metric tonnes, given the record paddy yield of 14.8 million metric tonnes in the 2025-26 Kharif season.
