CM Stalin Appeals To PM To Accelerate Issuing Of Fortified Rice Licence

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, on Tuesday, November 18, wrote to PM Narendra Modi and appealed for his intervention to issue fortified rice licences. He stated that results have been released for only 33 samples, against 77 samples uploaded on the Union government’s portal.
Not only this, he urged the Union government to rise the permissible moisture content for Paddy procurement from 17% to 22%.

What’s apart from the issue of fortified rice licence?

Apart from the issue of the fortified rice licence, he cited that paddy procurement in Tamil Nadu has climbed to 14.11 lakh metric tonnes so far this year. Notably, a sharp rise from 4.81 lakh metric tonnes during the same period last year. The state government has disbursed Rs 3,559 crore to 1.86 lakh farmers via 1,932 Direct Purchase Centres (DPCs) till November 16. The procurement stood at 4.83 lakh tonnes via 1,095 DPCs. Furthermore, he said that aggregate stock in the open market is anticipated to be 98.25 lakh metric tonnes based on the Food Department’s projections, which would translate to 66.81 lakh tonnes of rice after milling.
He reconsidered that Tamil Nadu had recommended to the Union Minister of Consumer Affairs to decrease the 20 lakh tonnes storage limit fixed in August

Paddy cultivation in the State was higher than ever this year

Moreover, he noted that the paddy cultivation in the State was higher than ever this year and asked the Centre to revise the rice-conversion quantum at the end of the current Kharif season. He outlined the issue of moisture content in the paddy, mentioning that although central teams have inspected the state, orders allowing the increased limit have not been issued yet. He also warned that the heavy rainfall may impact the paddy already procured in the state, which may be due to the intensifying northeast monsoon.
