In a significant move to prevent the sale of poor-quality, unauthorized, and fake seeds, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced that a new seed law will be introduced in the upcoming Budget session. While addressing the inauguration of the Asian Seed Congress 2025 in Mumbai on Monday, November 11, he stated that Clean Plant Centres are being established in Maharashtra to ensure the quality planting material for horticulture crops.
What’s apart from the announcement of the New Seed Law?
Apart from the announcement of the New Seed Law, he appealed to the seed industry to emphasize climate-resilient varieties, increased participation in pulses and oilseed production, and to focus on the sector’s role in national food security. Additionally, he appealed to ensure full compliance with the national SATHI (Seed Authentication, Traceability and Holistic Inventory) portal, which compels 100 percent registration for seed companies.
CM Fadnavis urges for development of seed varieties suited to climate-resilient farming
Speaking on this occasion, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis called for the development of seed varieites suited to natural and climate-resilient farming. He stated Maharashtra intends to bring 25 lakh hectares under natural farming in the upcoming years and urged the seed industry to innovate for long-term sustainability. Not only this, the chief minister noted that India’s seed market, currently valued at 7.8 billion dollars, is projected to climb to 19 billion dollars by 2030, with around 95 per cent of seeds produced domestically. He stated that the state is strengthening transparency through mandatory certification, digital traceability, and stricter action against fake seeds, at the same time advancing agriculture through AI-based initiatives.
