Progress in Negotiations to Increase Thai Rice Exports to China by 220,000 Tons This Year

In the latest update released by Government spokesperson on Thai rice exports discussions with China, Siripong Angkasakulkiat, spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office said that we are continuously following negotiations regarding Thailand’s rice exports to China. In this context, the Chinese government recently informed that discussions would continue with Thailand to ensure that Thailand meets its rice export target of 500,000 tons to China this year.

Notably, China rice import target for the year is set at 500,000-ton under state-to-state cooperation, while also negotiating additional rice import quotas for 2026. To further boost Thailand rice export growth, Thai government is in continuous touch with the Chinese government to ensure that the rice export target is fulfilled. The rice export deal also includes part of a state-to-state (G2G) cooperation agreement, which includes a total rice import quota of 10 million tons. Rice export 2025 deal between Thailand and China is regarded as a gesture of goodwill to mark the 50th anniversary of Thai-Chinese relations. And to further strengthen this goodwill gesture, Thailand’s PM Anutin has negotiated with President Xi to increase the import by an additional 220,000 tons which was earlier set at 280,000 tons. The additional quota will bring the total to 500,000 tons.

International Rice Trade Seeks New Opportunity in 2026

Further, International rice trade market is looking for more opportunities and expansion in 2026, with the Thai government and the Ministry of Commerce planning to negotiate with China for even higher rice import quotas. Thailand has already expressed its readiness to strengthen rice trade agreement between the two nations and increase rice exports to China in the future.

Suphajee Suthumpun, Thailand’s Minister of Commerce, added that negotiations have taken place at various levels, including discussions with the Chinese Ambassador to Thailand, as well as talks between the Ambassador and Prime Minister Anutin.
