Rice Exports from Pakistan Fall 32% in July–August, Overall Food Exports Down 23%

Rice exports from Pakistan were recorded at 545,403 metric tons during the first two months (July-August) of the current financial year, as compared to 616,744 metric tons exported during the same period last year. This downfall of 32% in July-August goes completely against the claims of rice exporters of Pakistan, in which they claimed that they are expecting strong harvest and further rejected claims of 60% crop loss after the flood.

Rice Exports & Earning Registered a Negative Growth Rate in Pakistan

While Pakistan is fighting for its stand over the trademark protection for its basmati rice, trend shows that rice consumers across the globe are quite not interested in basmati rice coming from Pakistan. During the period from July to August 2025, the country earned $314.388 million from rice exports, compared to earnings of $464.66 million in the corresponding period of the previous year.

The exports of rice also registered a negative growth of 32.34% during the period under review as compared to the same period last year, according to data from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics. One of the largest exporter of rice in the world, Pakistan reported an export of 101,934 metric tons of Basmati rice worth $107.294 million during the period under review, compared to 186,673 metric tons valued at $192.609 million in the same period last year.

Rice Exports Including Overall Food Group Exports Also Declines During the Period Under Review

Apart from basmati export and other rice exports, The overall food group exports from Pakistan during the period under review also decreased by 23.46 per cent compared to the same period last year. Food commodities worth $774.557 million were exported during the period, as compared to $1.011 billion in the corresponding period last year. Pakistan’s raw food exports also noted a sharp decline by 10.25 per cent in July 2025, ending a 19-month streak of continuous growth.

Adding more to the woes, food group imports into the country during the first two months of the current financial year grew by 36.73% compared to the same period last year. Different food commodities worth $1.469 billion were imported during July–August 2025, compared to $1.074 billion in the same period last year.
