PM Modi to launch ₹2,481 cr National Mission on Natural Farming (NMNF) on Aug 23

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to launch the ₹2,481 cr National Mission on Natural Farming (NMNF) on August 23, 2025. This initiative, sanctioned by the Union Cabinet, intends to promote sustainable and chemical-free farming nationwide, while reducing input costs and enhancing soil health.

About the National Mission on Natural Farming (NMNF)

This is a centrally sponsored initiative, conceived by Niti Aayog, that intends to promote sustainable farming on 750,000 hectares, benefiting 10 million farmers by increasing their income. With a budgetary proposal of ₹2,481 cr, it includes ₹1,584 crore allocated by the central government and ₹897 crore by state governments, covering the period up to the 15th Finance Commission. Its key targets also include raising awareness among one crore farmers and setting up 10,000 Bio-Input Resource Centres for farmers.

What do the officials say about NMNF?

According to officials, NMNF is a decentralised, farmer-led approach that combines traditional knowledge with scientific methods to build a strong support ecosystem. It allows a gradual but steady transition from chemical-based farming to sustainable farming and eco-friendly practices across the country. The NMNF marks a transitional shift in the Indian agricultural sector. Under this initiative, employing traditional, low-input farming within a modern digital and policy framework offers farmers a viable alternative that is environmentally sound, economically viable, and socially inclusive. The initiative is positioned to play a significant role in building a sustainable future for Indian agriculture with the help of strong training networks, transparent monitoring, and financial incentives.
