On the occasion of National Handloom Day 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared an image carrying a special message celebrating the Indian government’s commitment to empowering weavers and preserving India’s rich handloom heritage.
While sharing the post on X(formerly Twitter), he wrote: “Best wishes on National Handloom Day! Today is a day to celebrate our rich weaving traditions, which showcase the creativity of our people. We are proud of India’s handloom diversity and its role in furthering livelihoods and prosperity.”
Interestingly, the image features the tagline “Weaving Prosperity, Preserving Traditions” in which PM Modi says, “It is the constant endeavour of the Government to make the weavers’ work easier, increase their productivity and improve the quality and designs.”

Stating 11 years of sustained efforts, the government showcased key milestones:
1) Nearly 43 lakh weavers and allied workers gained direct market access through 2,600+ exhibitions, generating ₹1,700 crore+ in sales.
2) Handloom exports surged to over ₹21,000 crore, reaching 20+ countries, taking Indian handloom from local pride to global presence.
3) 1.6 lakh weavers in 10 Handloom Clustersempowered with improved infrastructure and tools.
4)1.2 lakh weavers benefited from improved looms, enabling better output and quality.
5) 90,000 weavers upskilled through specialised training, improving workmanship and earning potential.
6) 104 handloom products and Rs.1,700 crore+ secured under the Geographical Indications (GI) Act, 1999, preserving their unique identity and heritage.
Observed every year on August 7, National Handloom Day celebrates the Swadeshi Movement of 1905 and acknowledges the contribution of India’s handloom sector under the campaign #MyHandloomMyPride and #VocalForLocal.
