Black Pepper Demand Hit by Adverse Weather Conditions

Inclement weather in North India followed by heavy rains has led to a low demand in the black pepper market with prices ruling steady in several consuming centres. Reports suggest that non-garbled pepper in Kochi Terminal market is being sold at Rs 666 per kg while MG1 is being sold at Rs. 686 per kg.

Heavy Rainfall and Import from Major Producing Countries

Kishore Shamji from Indian Pepper and Spices Trade Association (IPSTA), stated that apart from the adverse weather conditions due to heavy rainfall imports from Black Pepper Producing Countries such as Sri Lanka and other countries are also affecting the domestic market. These conditions are creating a major slowdown in the domestic market as consumers are getting imported Black Pepper at a rate of Rs. 625 to Rs. 650 per kg which is comparatively lower than the domestic market.

7,000 Tonnes of Black Pepper Imported

In May -June 2025 India reportedly imported a total of about 7,000 tonnes of pepper, of which 1,100 tonnes came from Sri Lanka alone. However, leading pepper producing states in India such as Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala are expecting a good amount of production of Black Pepper owing to the favourable climate condition.
