Union government has taken a big step to limit the hoarding of wheat, govt. has re-imposed storage limit for Traders, wholesalers, retailers to ensure stability in the wheat prices. A noticed released by union govt. states that traders and wholesalers can stock up to 3,000 tonnes of wheat whereas retailers can stock 10 tonnes at each retail outlet. This step by govt. is aimed at ensuring transparency and normal supply in the market.
Wheat this year has seen a record-breaking production; ministry of agriculture has increased the wheat production estimate to 11.75 crore tonnes which is higher than previous year’s figure of 11.32 crore tonnes. Increase in wheat production estimate comes after the ongoing conditions better weather, improved seeds, and better MSP.
Owing to the record production of wheat, government procurement has reached 298 lakh tonnes which is the highest in the last 4 years. The stock of wheat in the central pool has increased to 440 lakh tonnes which is attributed to record wheat procurement. Govt. further declared that all units would have to declare their stock status on the wheat stock portal every Friday, failing to do so will lead to punishable action.
