New Delhi, 28 May 2025 – The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has increased its monsoon forecast to 106%. But as report suggests, this difference will be very small in terms of the amount of rainfall, yet it is good news for the agriculture sector.
In context with monsoon 2025, IMD Director General Mrityunjay Mahapatra said that “The southwest monsoon seasonal rainfall over the country is likely to be 106% of the long period average (LPA)”. According to the report released on Tuesday, rainfall is likely to be above normal in most parts of India during the upcoming monsoon season from June to September.
The core zone of Monsoon which covers most of India’s rain-fed agricultural areas, is also expected to receive above normal rainfall, which will provide a strong foundation for a successful Kharif crop season. This Monsoon season provide an important opportunity to farmers to accelerate the sowing of major Kharif crops like maize, cotton, soybean, sugarcane, oilseeds and pulses, especially in rain-fed areas where time carries a great significance.
Monsson carries a great significance because good rains will not only boost the agricultural economy but will also strengthen rural demand, which will have a positive impact on many sectors including fast-moving consumer goods. IMD stated that June to September rainfall is likely to be above normal over central and south peninsular India, normal over northwest India and below normal over northeast India.
