Here’s What Was Inside PM Modi’s Curated Basket of GI-Tagged Rice Varieties

PM Modi has recently concluded his 5-nation tour, including countries such as the UAE, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Italy that are hitting the headlines in the mainstream media. Not only this, but during his meeting with the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) Director-General, Qu Dongyu, in Rome, PM Modi represented a curated basket of India's GI-tagged rice varieties along with healthy millet bars. His representation highlights the country's rich agricultural diversity and traditional food heritage.

Palakkadan Matta rice, Kerala’s speciality

The first GI-tagged rice variety was Red Rice from Kerala, popularly known as Matta or Palakkadan Matta rice. It is an indigenous variety cultivated in the black soil regions of Palakkad. The rice variety got the GI tag in March 2028. It is red and earthy in appearance, having a coarse texture, used in many recipes like hearty curries and classic breakfasts like Puttu and Appam. Notably, it is also rich in fibre, magnesium and Vitamin B6, which enhances not only its cultural but also nutritional value.

Gobindobhog rice from West Bengal

Next, in the curated basket was Gobindobhog rice from West Bengal. It is an aromatic short-grain rice variety widely regarded as one of the finest rice varieties from eastern India. The rice is known for its creamy appearance and naturally sweet, buttery aroma. A preferred choice for several traditional Bengali dishes like Khichuri and Kheer, it was officially granted the Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2017.

The basket was incomplete without Basmati rice – ‘Queen of Fragrance’

Another rice variety was Basmati rice, usually known as the ‘Queen of Fragrance’. The premium long-grain rice is recognised globally for its slender grains, distinctive nutty aroma and fluffy texture after cooking. The rice is used not only in Indian but also in global dishes.

It is generally aged before processing to enhance its fragrance and cooking qualities. Surprisingly, it is gluten-free and holds a moderate glycaemic index.

Assam’s pride – Joha rice

PM Modi also represented Joha rice, which is Assam’s pride. It is a unique aromatic rice variety cultivated in Assam's Brahmaputra Valley. It is known for its small grains and naturally sweet fragrance. Having received the GI tag in 2017, the rice is rich in amino acids and strong antioxidant properties.

Kalanamak rice from Uttar Pradesh

The last rice variety in the curated basket was Kalanamak rice, which originates from the Terai region of Uttar Pradesh, particularly Siddharthnagar. Commonly referred to as ‘Buddha Rice’, the ancient grain is distinguished by its black husk and aromatic, medium-slender grains. Significantly, it is rich in iron, zinc and antioxidants. Kalanamak rice is also recognised for having a low glycaemic index. The rice variety received a GI tag in 2013.

Not only rice grains, but PM Modi also gifted healthy millet bars, showcasing India's growing focus on nutritious and climate-resilient food products.

Healthy millet bars are also in focus

Millets outline an important part of Maharashtra's agricultural heritage. They are widely cultivated in regions like Solapur, Ahmednagar and the Marathwada belt. The varieties include jowar (sorghum) and bajra (pearl millet), both well-suited to semi-arid climatic conditions and low rainfall regions. These traditional grains are valued for their high nutritional content, including dietary fibre, protein and essential minerals. Interestingly, the millet bars reflected a blend of traditional Indian agriculture with modern health-conscious food practices and easy consumption patterns.

PM Modi received the 2026 Agricola Medal

Notably, the meeting took place during PM Modi's State Visit to Italy. Apart from these, PM Modi received the 2026 Agricola Medal — the highest honour awarded by the FAO — during a special ceremony held at the organisation's headquarters on Wednesday. The medal was presented by Qu Dongyu at the historic FAO Plenary Hall in recognition of PM Modi’s efforts towards food security, agricultural development and farmer welfare, as per the organisation.
