Why is Indonesia Moving to Secure Premium Rice Supply?

Indonesia is taking steps to boost the supply of premium rice after shortages were reported in modern retail outlets in recent weeks. Trade Minister Budi Santoso said the government is coordinating with retailers to ensure that the state logistics agency, Bulog, can continue supplying both traditional markets and modern stores.

Bulog has been instructed to optimise the distribution of its available premium rice stocks. The agency has also prepared up to 75,000 tonnes of premium rice per month for selected modern retail networks.

As part of wider efforts to prevent shortages, Bulog previously announced plans to release one million tonnes of Food Supply and Price Stabilisation rice, sold under the Beras Kita brand. The government is also increasing oversight of rice products after identifying indications that some products may have been altered and marketed as fortified rice. Authorities are conducting laboratory tests while monitoring quality standards and product labels to protect consumers and maintain stable rice supplies.

Cambodia Boosts Rice Exports to Philippines With Bulk Carriers

Cambodia has started using bulk carriers to transport rice directly to the Philippines, a move expected to increase export capacity while cutting shipping costs and delivery times. A 10,000-tonne shipment was inaugurated at Sihanouk Autonomous Port on September 16, marking a new development for Cambodia’s rice export sector. Bulk carriers allow large quantities of rice to be loaded directly into a ship’s holds, reducing the need for containers. Cambodian authorities said the system could improve efficiency and strengthen the competitiveness of Cambodian rice in international markets. During the first eight months of 2026, Cambodia exported 122,201 tonnes of rice to the Philippines, representing 15.4% of its total rice exports. Another 87,344 tonnes has been contracted for the year.

The Philippines, one of the world’s largest rice importers, is expected to import a record 5.5 million tonnes in 2026, creating further opportunities for Cambodian rice exporters and strengthening trade between the two countries.

North Korea Rice Prices Fall as Grain Supplies Rise

Rice prices in North Korea’s informal markets fell sharply in September as increased grain supplies and weaker demand pushed prices lower. In Pyongyang, rice sold for 41,100 North Korean won per kilogram on September 13, down 8.9% from two weeks earlier. Similar declines were recorded in Sinuiju and Hyesan, while corn prices also dropped. The decline appears linked to increased grain supplies around North Korea’s September 9 founding anniversary and the Chuseok harvest holiday. Government food distributions to workers and officials also reduced market demand, while newly harvested corn added to supplies.

At the same time, the Chinese yuan’s exchange rate against the North Korean won fell about 12.5% across the three surveyed cities, marking its sharpest decline of 2026 so far. Increased trade with China had previously strengthened demand for the yuan. The latest fall may represent a market correction, although it remains unclear whether the trend will continue.
