West Asia Conflict Freezes India’s $6 Billion Basmati Rice Trade
According to sources, India’s basmati rice exports industry has been brought to an abrupt halt as the ongoing conflict in West Asia disrupts trade routes, delays shipments, and freezes payments, leaving exporters, millers, and farmers struggling with an unprecedented crisis. Notably, the Middle East war unfolding thousands of kilometres away has effectively choked a sector that contributes around $6 billion annually to India’s export economy. Consequently, Madhya Pradesh’s Raisen district, one of the country’s key basmati hubs, has been witnessing a stark impact. Surprisingly, Rice mills that once operated round the clock during peak export season now stand silent. This period, typically marked by heavy shipments to Gulf countries ahead of Ramzan and Eid, has instead turned into a phase of uncertainty and financial stress. Interestingly, India exports nearly 60 lakh metric tonnes of basmati rice annually, commanding a dominant share of the global market. A significant portion, nearly half, goes to West Asian countries, including Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, and the UAE. This heavy dependence has now become a vulnerability, as geopolitical tensions disrupt both logistics and demand cycles.
Sangareddy Devotee Writes ‘Rama’ on 4,100 Rice Grains
Dundigalla Padma, a resident of Bachepally in Nizampet mandal and an ardent devotee of Lord Rama has written Rama in Telugu on 4,100 rice grains. The effort stood as a testament to her devotion, patience and grit, as Padma took nearly 10 days, spending three hours a day, as she wanted to do something different to express her devotion to Lord Rama during Rama Navami. She started writing on the grains ahead of Sri Rama Navami in 2025. However, she could write only 1,500 words after a week-long effort last year. However, she started a bit early this year and completed writing on 4,100 grains. She had presented the grains to Lord Rama temples located at Ramireddipet and Bachepally, where the priests would mix them with Akshanthalu (sacred yellow rice). Padma's husband Siddiramulu, who is also an ardent devotee, has presented the grains to lord Rama temples at Ramireddipet and Bachepally, them to another temple located near Dubbak in Siddipet district. Padma said that they participate in the Rama Navami celebrations every year with much devotion, stating that she could complete the task with ease with the support of her husband and two daughters. Though it tests patience a bit, the Lord Rama devotee said that she adores doing it. She added that she would continue to do it every year until things permit her. Interestingly, her efforts have been highly appreciated by Lord Rama devotees and priests.
West Asia Conflict Leaves ₹2,000–₹25,000 Crore in Pending Payments for India’s Basmati Rice Exporters
India's premium basmati rice trade is witnessing ups and downs amid escalating conflict in West Asia, which disrupts exports, blocks consignments at ports, and leaves payments worth thousands of crores pending, raising concerns for traders and farmers alike. Moreover, a businessman from Bhopal cited that consignments of Premium 1121 Basmati rice, earlier exported regularly, are now stuck at ports amid the ongoing situation, warning that continued disruption could lead to heavy losses for Indian traders and impact farming communities. Shockingly, the Premium 1121 Basmati rice, which we used to export, is currently being held at the ports. If this situation continues, Indian traders will witness significant losses. The payments, ranging from Rs 2,000 crores to Rs 25,000 crores, are pending and have not been received, prompting problems for the traders. Interestingly, the government is currently taking its own measures, and if the situation persists, farmers will also face problems in the future. In response to the broader crisis, the government also conducted a meeting on Wednesday to assess the situation in West Asia. The meeting was chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on the West Asia crisis and witnessed participation from senior opposition leaders as well as significant Union ministers.
