Indonesia Assures Rice Stocks Safe Amid Fortified Rice Recall

Despite the ongoing recall of fortified rice products from 25 brands, Indonesia’s Trade Minister Budi Santoso has assured consumers that rice supplies at retail outlets remain sufficient. Moreover, the recall followed government testing that found the products failed to meet the nutritional standards stated on their labels.

The minister said the government is strengthening supplies through an additional one million tons of rice under the Food Supply and Price Stabilization (SPHP) programme. The rice will be distributed through modern retailers and traditional markets. Notably, the rice supplied by Bulog. Besides this, the government is coordinating with the National Food Agency (Bapanas) and the Ministry of Agriculture to ensure smooth distribution and maintain market stability. Bapanas said 12 of the affected brands had withdrawn their rice stocks by early September, while recalls for the remaining products were underway. Government rice reserves stood at around 4.6 million tons as of September 16.

Philippines’ Record Rice Import Plan Opens Export Opportunities

The Philippines is expected to import a record 5 million tonnes of rice in 2026, creating substantial opportunities for Vietnamese exporters in the final months of the year. The country is seeking to cover a domestic production shortfall of nearly 900,000 tonnes caused by El Niño while building stocks for early 2027.

According to the Vietnam Food Association, by August 13, the Philippines had already imported 3.46 million tonnes, surpassing its total imports for 2025. Vietnam supplied about 74% of those shipments.

However, exporters face longer-term challenges as Philippine imports are expected to return to around 3.8–4 million tonnes in 2027. Vietnam’s rice industry is also being urged to improve quality, boost branding and diversify export markets. The two countries have agreed to maintain stable rice supply chains and continue cooperation on trade.

India’s Rice Production May Drop 6.5%. But Why ?

According to industry officials, India’s rice production could decline by nearly 10 million metric tonnes, or 6.5%, this year as below-normal rainfall impact crop yields. The projected fall would bring output down from last year’s record 154 million tonnes and mark the biggest decline since 2009-10.

Interestingly, India has received 15% less rainfall than normal since the monsoon began on June 1, whereas some major rice-growing states have recorded deficits of up to 42%. Not only this, but the area under summer-sown rice was also nearly 4% lower year-on-year at 42.68 million hectares as of September 11.

Lower production has already pushed domestic rice prices higher, potentially making Indian exports more expensive. However, record reserves of 59.6 million tonnes as of September 1 could allow India to maintain exports without immediate restrictions.
