West Bengal Announces ₹5,000 Aid and 50 kg Rice for Families. But why?

On Wednesday, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced a festive-season package of Rs 5,000 and 50 kg of rice for each eligible family of tea garden workers made jobless by garden closures, in addition to their existing 35-kg quota. Notably, after a special Cabinet meeting at the state secretariat, Adhikari said that the benefits will be available from Durga Puja to Chhath Puja. Furthermore, he said that this is a small step by a government that is committed to people’s welfare. We will transfer Rs 5,000 to the bank accounts of 19,524 workers aged below 60 years. Each family will also receive an additional 50 kg of rice. Not only this, but he also said that the government has taken this step since these workers were not receiving wages. The Minister also pointed out that workers of operational tea gardens have been paid a 20 per cent puja bonus this year, a rise from the 16 per cent given by the previous government.

Why are rising Rice Prices in Visakhapatnam raising concerns?

Why are rising Rice Prices in Visakhapatnam raising concerns?

Households across Visakhapatnam are witnessing rising grocery expenses as retail prices of fine-quality rice continue to rise. The price rise is causing concern among middle- and lower-income families, for whom rice is a daily staple. The recent reports state that a 26 kg bag of premium rice that cost approximately 1,700-1,800 between March and August has climbed to around 2,200 for some brands. Moreover, varieties such as HMT and BPT Sannalu are selling at 80-85 per kg in retail markets. Prices change depending on the variety, brand, and quality.

According to traders, the increase is due to higher paddy procurement costs and prices, as told by rice millers. In addition, concerns have been raised about possible stockholding and artificial scarcity, although such allegations require investigation and should not be treated as established findings. Market participants have called for closer examination of stocks and pricing practices.

Egypt Continues Rice Exports, Raises Export Fees to $120 per Tonne

Recently, the Future of Egypt Authority for Sustainable Development plans to resume rice exports. Notably, this will be followed by a one-month hiatus caused by regional shipping disruptions. The agency raised export fees from $100 to $120 per ton, which coincides with a domestic white rice price rise of about 500 Egyptian pounds ($9.40) per ton. In the month of mid-August, export pleas submitted by local companies have reached about 100,000 tons of rice, but the authority managed to ship only 25,000 tons due to maritime difficulties. A trader and member of the Federation of Industries’ rice division asserted that external markets continue to show steady demand for Egyptian rice in Morocco, Syria and other Arab countries. It offers local companies an opportunity to increase outbound shipments in the upcoming period. Moreover, the source said his company is preparing a shipment of roughly 2,000 tons of rice for export through Future of Egypt, paying a fee of $120 per ton.
