Indonesia Reasserts Rice Import Ban Amidst Illegal Shipment Found

The Indonesian government has reasserted its commitment to expand the national rice self-sufficiency and rice import ban that breaches state policy, as on Monday, November 24, Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman made the statement following the authorities’ discovery of 250 tons of illegal rice from Sabang, Aceh.

What does the President state about the Rice import Ban?

Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman said: “President Prabowo (Subianto) has stated that rice import is forbidden due to the availability of ample stocks”. Not only this, he also emphasized that the government will halt any attempt to bring in rice, especially through unlawful channels. Moreover, he cited strong national stocks and illustrated the 2025 rice production of 34.77 million tons as per Statistics Indonesia data and revealed that Indonesia has no reason to do rice import .
In addition, he alleged that the rice import ban has contributed to a decrease in global rice prices, recommending that rice from Vietnam and Thailand has become inexpensive since Indonesia is not importing.
Furthermore, Sulaiman mentioned that leaders of other countries have urged President Prabowo to export to Indonesia, even if only in small amounts. He said: “we have articulated that there’s enough rice, and we estimate that the end of the year will be the highest rice price.

Govt. took immediate action on a 250-ton illegal shipment

On the 250-ton illegal shipment, he stated that the government took immediate action, after receiving initial information regarding rice entering the country without a permit, adding that his office coordinated with significant agencies and sealed the consignment. Notably, he announced on Sunday about the sealing of a warehouse belonging to PT MSG, which imported the rice from Thailand without authorisation. Lastly, he said: “We have sealed it and we are asking for the perpetrators to be investigated”.
