Top Rice News 1: India Sends 1,000 MT Rice to Malawi to Boost Food Security Amid El Niño Drought

Recently, India dispatched a humanitarian shipment of 1,000 metric tons of rice to Malawi to provide aid to the African nation to cope with food shortages prompted by drought associated with the El Niño climatic conditions. Moreover, the assistance outlines India's continued commitment to supporting the developing nations and boosting cooperation among nations of the Global South. Notably, the rice consignment was shipped from the Nhava Sheva Port in Maharashtra and is intended to provide immediate relief to communities in Malawi that have been impacted by severe drought and crop failures. In addition, Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal wrote in a post on X: "India-Malawi partnership for food security. To support Malawi's efforts towards food security following the drought caused by the El Niño effect, India has dispatched a humanitarian consignment of 1,000 metric tons of rice from the Nhava Sheva Port to the people of Malawi. A reiteration of India's continued commitment to supporting partners in the Global South and advancing the spirit of South-South cooperation". Besides this, the El Niño weather pattern has disturbed the rainfall pattern across parts of southern Africa, including Malawi, leading to reduced agricultural output and rising food insecurity.

Top Rice News 2: Domestic Basmati Rice Prices Decline Amid Export Slowdown

Amid the West Asia War crisis, Basmati rice prices have fallen locally due to disruptions in exports to the Middle East. Significantly, the Middle East market accounts for half of India’s basmati rice shipments. Notably, Industry experts predict further price declines if the conflict persists. In the situation of a severe crisis, nearly 400,000 tonnes of basmati rice are currently held up at ports and in transit. In addition, the industry expects an even sharper correction in the upcoming weeks, with more than three-fourths of India’s basmati rice output typically shipped abroad. Any prolonged slowdown in rice exports could increase local supplies and put further pressure on prices of the premium grain, as stated by industry executives. Dev Garg, vice president, Indian Rice Exporters Federation (IREF) said: “Basmati rice prices have fallen by about 6% since the war broke out in the Middle East, which is a crucial market for Indian basmati rice exports. If the war is prolonged, basmati rice prices in the domestic market can slide further.”

Top Rice News 3: Bangladesh’s Rice Boom Hides ‘Hidden Hunger’ as Farmers Focus on Yield

At present, Bangladesh is the world's third-largest rice producer, with output rising from 10.9 million metric tons in 1971 to 42.0 million metric tons in 2022. However, malnutrition remains widespread since the diets are heavily dependent on rice, which lacks various essential micronutrients. Notably, Health indicators reflect the gap between food availability and nutrition. Around 28% of children under five are stunted, nearly 37% of women of reproductive age are anaemic, and roughly 13% of the population is undernourished. Zinc deficiency affects more than 40% of preschool-aged children and 57% of nonpregnant and nonlactating women. According to Researchers, farmers' preference for high-yielding rice varieties contributes to the problem. The study, based on data from 3,493 farming households in the Faridpur district, discovered that nearly 81% of farmers prioritised higher yield over other traits such as improved nutrition, climate resilience, or input efficiency when choosing which rice varieties to grow.
