Top Rice News: Rice Consignments, El Niño Threat And U.S. Rice Acreage

Top Rice News today covers how Telangana has flagged off rice exports to the UK under the India-UK CETA, opening new opportunities for exporters. At the same time, Malaysia is boosting drought-resistant rice research to safeguard food security amid El Niño concerns. In the U.S., rice acreage has dropped to its lowest level since 1972, raising concerns over long-grain rice supplies, export competitiveness, and future market dynamics.
Telangana flags off rice, food product consignments to the UK

On Wednesday, July 15, export consignments from Telangana to the United Kingdom were flagged at the Inland Container Depot (ICD) in Sanathnagar. It marks the implementation of the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). While flagging off the consignments, the Special Secretary said that this trade deal marks a major milestone in India-UK economic relations and it is expected to improve market access for Indian exporters. He stated that the tariff reductions on a wide range of products would improve the competitiveness of Telangana’s exports and generate fresh opportunities for export-oriented industries. Moreover, marking the agreement’s entry into force, parallel export flag-off events were also organised in Nizamabad. Nizamabad District Collector Ila Tripathi flagged off a rice export consignment of Shree Gajanan Industries in the presence of APEDA and Spices Board officials, whereas Joint Director General of Foreign Trade Sambhaji Chavan flagged off a food products consignment exported by Fumar Agri Foods Pvt Ltd in Hyderabad.
Why Malaysia ramps up drought-resistant rice research to boost food security amid El Niño threat?

The government is intensifying preparations to address the potential impacts of the El Niño phenomenon as it seeks to protect Malaysia’s food security. Moreover, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said the measures include more strategic management of water resources, the implementation of smart irrigation monitoring systems and the boosting of irrigation infrastructure through drainage upgrade projects. He mentioned that developing rice varieties that can withstand changing weather conditions and environmental challenges remains one of the major priorities in the latest research efforts. Notably, the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI) has produced several new rice varieties with drought-resistant characteristics. The Prime Minister was responding to a question from Tangga Batu MP Bakri Jamaluddin on the government’s preparations to address the El Niño phenomenon, which is expected to influence the agriculture sector and national food security, including irrigation water supply, rice production, food crops and livestock farming.
According to reports, U.S. rice acreage has fallen to its lowest level in more than five decades. It has prompted traders to closely monitor this year’s crop and its effect on supplies.
Why U.S. rice acreage drops to lowest level since 1972?

Jeremy Zwinger, CEO of The Rice Trader and Farm and Trade Inc stated that southern rice plantings have fallen sharply, pushing the aggregate U.S. rice acreage to its lowest level since 1972. Whereas California is expecting a solid crop, Zwinger stated that the biggest concern is long-grain rice, which is the type traded on U.S. futures markets. He notes that long-grain acreage is down, generating uncertainty despite large carryover supplies from earlier years. The combination of a near-record carryover and a much smaller crop has led to increased activity in rice futures as traders weigh whether available supplies will be enough to meet demand. Zwinger says the market is also grappling with another challenge: growing competition overseas. He highlights that the United States has lost significant market share in major export destinations, particularly Mexico, adding pressure to an already tight long-grain rice outlook.
