Plea to Make 10 kg Rice Bags Available at Rythu Bazaars in AP

In Andhra Pradesh, weaker and lower-income public groups want the government to make rice available in 10 kg bags at Rythu Bazaars. Several families say that they cannot afford standard 26 kg bags at once amid a sharp price increase in the open market. Notably, prices have increased to Rs 100 per kg in the private markets suddenly after the storage shortage reports which are linked to El Niño conditions and diversion of paddy for ethanol. In the aftermath, traders withheld stocks and released them later at higher prices. Moreover, known rice varieties such as Swarna, RBL, Sona Masoori, BPT, and Kurnool sona have increased by Rs 300 to 500 in a week. In addition, the smaller packs have become expensive, with 10 kg around and 5 kg around Rs 500. Not only this, but retail rates have surpassed Rs 80 to Rs 90 per kg in some areas.

Broken Rice Prices Surge 53% in Three Weeks; Export Restrictions May Return

According to the Indian Rice Exporters’ Federation (IREF), India’s broken rice exports could witness fresh restrictions as increasing global prices, rising demand from ethanol producers, and higher domestic prices raise concerns related to availability. As per the federation, international prices of 100 percent broken rice have crossed $360 per metric tonne, which raises the possibility of government intervention to ensure sufficient supplies to meet the domestic requirements. Additionally, domestic prices have jumped in recent weeks. The data of the Department of Consumer Affairs illustrate that the all-India average wholesale price of broken rice increased to Rs 3,036 per quintal on November 2 from Rs 2, 883 per quintal on October 10. Now, this depicts an increase of nearly 5.3 percent in just over three weeks. Notably, the inflation in broken rice has picked up. The Wholesale Price Index (WPI) for broken rice witnessed year-on-year inflation of 5.38 per cent in September 2026, compared with 4.37 per cent in August, which indicates growing pressure on domestic prices.

Vietnam Rice Export Rally: Tight Supply Pushes Prices to Two-Year High

Vietnam’s rice export market is facing a significant price rally as the 5% broke white rice quotations rose by approximately USD 30 per tonne in one week to USD 470-480 per tonne, approaching a two-year high. Now, this rise is driven by tightening pre-harvest supplies, reducing availability of old crop stocks, and concerns related to the potential impact of El Niño on regional production. Remarkably, Vietnam’s upcoming autumn-winter harvest is expected to be considerably smaller than the previous summer-autumn crop, adding to supply concerns. Rice importers are securing in anticipation of possible weather-related production disruptions. Significantly, Vietnam’s export prices are now close to Thailand’s and substantially higher than India’s USD 389-394 per tonne. Although export volumes have reduced year on year, October shipments showed improvement. Prices are expected to remain firm in the near term, which depends on harvest conditions and global demand.
