Philippine rice sector continues to receive international support as South Korea funds the establishment of new rice seed processing and cold storage facilities at the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) in the Science City of Muñoz, Nueva Ecija. The project aims to strengthen the country’s food security and boost productivity in the agriculture sector.
Funded by Korea’s Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA) and the Korean Rural Community Corporation, and implemented by the Global Agriculture Policy Institute, the facilities are designed to enhance the efficiency of seed processing, storage, and preservation. According to PhilRice, these modern facilities will reduce post-harvest losses, accelerate seed processing, and ensure a steady supply of high-quality certified rice seeds to Filipino farmers.
“The initiative is expected to contribute significantly to the country’s food-security goals by stabilizing seed supply and improving productivity,” PhilRice said in a statement.
The newly built seed processing and cold storage complex features advanced technologies for uniform drying and efficient operations, allowing for improved seed quality and longer shelf life. This development marks another milestone in the Philippines–South Korea agricultural cooperation, demonstrating both nations’ commitment to advancing agricultural resilience and sustainability.
MAFRA Director Shin Jae Kim emphasized that the project and its accompanying training programs will help elevate the Philippines’ agricultural technology infrastructure, bringing the country closer to its goal of a self-sufficient rice industry. The inauguration of the facilities coincided with PhilRice’s 40th anniversary, underscoring decades of collaboration and shared commitment to agricultural innovation and food security enhancement.
