Russian President Vladimir Putin’s 2-day visit to India: Defence Deal, Trade boost and dinner with PM Modi on agenda

Russian President Vladimir Putin began his two-day visit to India on Thursday, December 4, during which he attended a dinner hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Not only this, Putin also took part in the 23rd India-Russia Summit on December 5. The summit talks between PM Modi and Russian President Putin are likely to focus on defence deal, bilateral trade boost from external pressure and exploring cooperation in small modular reactors.
Russian President Putin’s visit comes when New Delhi import crude oil
Notably, Russian President Putin’s visit popped up at a time when New Delhi was importing crude oil from Russia. Apart from the defence deal and bilateral trade boost, the topic of US sanctions on India’s procurement of Russian crude oil is also discussed during the summit.
On Tuesday, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that New Delhi’s purchase of Crude oil from Russia may decline for a short period in view of Western Sanctions, However, he said that Moscow is taking steps to improve the supplies. It is also notified that Indian exports to Russia are anticipated to rise in areas of Pharma, agriculture, food products and consumer goods under trade Basket.
Moreover, the Indian and Russian sides are also likely to discuss New Delhi’s proposed free trade agreement with the Eurasian Economic Union. Before the summit, the Defence ministers of both nations have gone for wide-ranging talks that focused on India’s plan to procure additional batches of S-400 missile systems and other critical military hardware from Russia. In July, last year PM Modi travelled to Moscow for the annual summit. Russia has been a time-tested partner for India and a key pillar of New Delhi’s foreign policy.
