Hili Land port, the border checkpoint on the India- Bangladesh border has imposed a rice import ban from India. However, it further notified that other goods will be imported and exported as usual via the Hili Land Port. The Government stopped importing rice completely from December 1. Notably, Bangladesh which is currently issuing tenders for rice import from several nations has stopped rice supply from India as supply has exceeded demand.
Custom duties officials at Hili Port, said that 234,270 metric tonnes of rice have been imported through the Hili Land Port in past four month. Notably, Bangladesh approved rice imports from India on the 12th of August in order to stabilise the local rice market, which was further extended in two rounds until the 30th November to meet the local demands.
Imports & Exports of Other Goods at Hili Land Port to Proceed as Normal
Though, the government has suspended rice supply from India, import and exports of other goods will proceed as normal, reports further clarified. It is believed that since the supply of rice as exceeded the demand, the suspension at Hili Port is indeed a good move by the Bangladesh government to keep a check on rice prices in the country. As per the reports, rice prices have gone down Tk 5-6 per kg at the Hili Land Port market as supply exceeds demand.
