Relief for 3.5 Million Farmers in Madhya Pradesh

Farmers in Madhya Pradesh have received a big sigh of relief as the Madhya Pradesh government has decided to waive the penal interest. In a historic decision at the cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav, govt. has decided to waive the penal interest amounting to ₹84.17 crore on the irrigation water charges owed by farmers. It will benefit approx. 3.5 million farmers across the state.
Outstanding Water Charges Accumulated Over 25 Years
The principal amount of irrigation water charges was steadily increasing in the state since the year 2000. The outstanding principal amounts as on date is ₹563.29 crore, that includes interest of ₹84.17 crore. The state govt. has decided to completely waive off the interest amount providing a big relief to the farmers.
Farmers will be allowed to make a lump-sum payment of the outstanding irrigation charges up to April 1, 2025, and the farmer paying the full principal amount by March 31, 2026, will be completely waived off from the penal interest.
