Amid the disastrous Punjab Floods 2025, the state government. has launched a five-day campaign to revive grain Mandis hit by floods, ensuring that farmers would not face any hurdles ahead of the upcoming paddy procurement season. Moreover, the state has instructed officials to complete the restoration work by September 19. Notably, the campaign began on Sunday, focusing flood-hit areas in Punjab where mandis were waterlogged and choked with silt.
What did the state agriculture minister say about the campaign amid the Punjab Floods?
The state agriculture minister, Gurmeet Singh Khudian, stated that the campaign is intended to provide a seamless selling experience to farmers. Furthermore, he said that the AAP-led govt. headed by Bhagwant Mann is fully committed to protecting the interests of farmers affected by the Punjab floods. The campaign is part of our effort to ensure that no farmer faces inconvenience in bringing their crop to the mandis. He further emphasised that preliminary arrangements, including infrastructure repairs, removal of stagnant water, and clearance of silt deposits, have already been completed in several markets.
Punjab Floods: damaged over 2.3 lakh acres of farmland
Notably, Punjab has witnessed the worst floods in decades as relentless rainfall and swollen rivers have submerged villages, towns, and farmlands in the districts, including Gurdaspur, Pathankot, Fazilka, Kapurthala, Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, Hoshiarpur, and Amritsar. Heavy rains exacerbated the crisis of the Punjab Floods, in which over 2.56 lakh people were affected. The Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi rivers surged, inundating large areas and damaging over 2.3 lakh acres of farmland, and devastating the paddy crop of the Kharif season. Undeniably, the recent Punjab floods have reminded the 1988 deluge, when the water level in the villages had gone up to 12 feet. It had left people stranded on terraces and trees.
