Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been seen promoting (geographical indication) GI tagged products on Friday, November 29. The promotion was done as a part of the Vocal for Local Campaign and the Atmanirbhar Bharat Initiative, associating them with cultural heritage, economic empowerment and global recognition.
Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, citing the vision of VIkas Bhi, Virasat Bhi, has set a goal of reaching 10,000 (Geographical Indication) GI tagged products in India by 2030. The Gujarat government stated that the aim is to strengthen the local communities by promoting indigenous products. Kutch and Saurashtra regions have earned prestigious and prominent GI tags
The state is promoting its cultural heritage, from Kutch’s renowned textiles to Saurashtra’s premium products, through initiatives like GI tagging, so that the state’s artisans and farmers gain recognition on the international stage and Gujarat turns self-reliant at an international level. As per the Gujarat government, the preservation and promotion of GI products stressed the principle of Viksit Gujarat, transforming local strengths into global competitiveness.
Moreover, the Kutch and Saurashtra regions have earned prestigious and prominent GI tags, including Ajrakh, Bandhani, Rogan Craft painting, Kutch Shawls, Kachchhi Kharek and Kesar Mango. Not only this, but it also fosters growth for local artisans and global recognition. The upcoming Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference in Rajkot is set to underscore the regional excellence of handicraft and handloom artisans and unlock the export potential.
