Odisha Rice Millers Resumes Paddy Procurement After Govt Resolves Key Issues

In the series of latest developments, Odisha rice millers resumed paddy procurement from the designated mandis following an assurance from the state government to fulfil their demand within two to three weeks.

Notably, the rice millers were determined not to participate in the paddy procurement operations, which began on November 25. The food supplies and consumer welfare minister, Krushna Chandra Patra, chaired a meeting with members of All Odisha Rice Millers’ Association (AORMA) and miller representatives from 30 districts at Lok Seva Bhawan to find a solution.

To the reporters, the minister stated that he agreed to meet four of the rice millersdemands immediately. The significant demand of the rice millers was the enhancement of custom milling charges for raw and boiled rice. He said: “We decided to meet again soon to sort out other issues, to which they agreed. I’m confident enough that all issues flagged by the rice millers will be resolved, followed by the three hours of discussion. The millers assured me of the paddy procurement from mandis from Tuesday.

The next significant demand of rice millers is the evacuation of around 12 lakh tonnes of custom-milled rice from their godowns. Responding to this demand, the minister stated that the Ministry for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution has approved lifting of an additional eight lakh tonne of rice from the annual estimate of 50 lakh tonne. However, the Food Corporation of India (FCI) has not acted on the order yet. To resolve the rice millers’ issues, the millers’ association has recently written to CM Mohan Charan Majhi refuting their participation in the paddy procurement process until the government look at their demands. The CM has directed Patra to resolve the issue arising out of the non-lifting of paddy by rice millers from mandis after an uproar from western Odisha farmers.
