Nepal Appoints First Female PM Sushila Karki After Deadly Unrest

In a historic move, Nepal announced former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as the first female Prime Minister of the nation. The announcement to name new Prime Minister came after the deadly protests that killed over 51 people, injured more than 1,300, and led to the escape of thousand of prisoners. The Gen Z protests not only caused the violent unrest but also kept the dignity of Nepal on stake.

President Ramchandra Poudel’s office announced the appointment of Sushila Karki, the country’s first female head of government. She is also the only woman of Nepal to have served as the chief justice of Nepal’s Supreme Court. The newly appointed female head of the country took oath as the interim prime minister of Nepal and received congratulatory message from countries across the nation.

Prime Minister Congratulated First Female PM Sushila Karki

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Sushila Karki on her appointment as the interim prime minister of Nepal which came after the Gen-Z protests that force the earlier KP Sharma Oli government to resign. PM Modi, in his congratulatory message via an online platform (X formerly known as Twitter) said that "I extend my best wishes to Right Hon. Mrs. Sushila Karki on assuming office as the Prime Minister of the Interim Government of Nepal. India remains firmly committed to the peace, progress, and prosperity of the people of Nepal."

Fugitives Tried Cross Into India Following the Gez Z Protests

Reportedly, Nepal police spokesperson said that this week 21 protesters, nine prisoners, three police officers and 18 others were killed so far. Whereas 1,300 people were injured as police fought to control crowds. More than 12,500 prisoners escaped from multiple jails across the nation.

The police spokesperson also said that Some of the fugitives have reportedly tried to cross into India, where several have been apprehended by Indian border forces. India’s External Affairs Ministry also welcomed the appointment of Karki government while stating that “As a close neighbour, a fellow democracy and a long-term development partner, India will continue to work closely with Nepal for the well-being and prosperity of our two peoples and countries.”
