Man Booked for Smuggling Anna Bhagya Rice in Karnataka

On Monday, August 4, in a major crackdown, officials from the Revenue Department and the Food and Civil Supplies Department seized 779 kilograms of rice that is meant for the Anna Bhagya scheme in Karnataka. The operation was conducted after a tip-off related to the illegal transportation of government-supplied rice.

The accused was identified as B. Vittal from Gonikoppal. He was caught red-handed by the Ponnampet police while attempting to smuggle the rice to Hunsur. The Anna Bhagya scheme is an initiative by the state government which aims to provide free rice to families below the poverty line. Vittal allegedly collected rice from several poor families in Gonikoppal, exploiting their vulnerability for personal gain. According to officials, the accused was found to be involved in such activities earlier. To avoid detection during transport, he would disguise the rice sacks by placing bags of bananas and other items on top. However, during the recent raid conducted on Monday, his cover was blown, and the illegal consignment was discovered.

Not only this, officials confirmed that Vittal had intended to sell the rice in the black market at Hunsur, thereby depriving the rightful beneficiaries of the government scheme. Notably, the timely intervention by the officials helped prevent further misuse of the subsidised food meant for the underprivileged section. The accused was taken into custody, and a case has been registered under relevant sections for smuggling and misusing the public distribution system (PDS) resources. The seized rice has been taken into official custody, and further investigations are underway to determine in entire network and culprits behind such illegal activities. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to protecting government welfare schemes and ensuring that the benefits reach the underprivileged and poor. Moreover, strict action has been promised against those who exploit such schemes for personal gain.
