New Delhi, India – On 5th June 2025 nations across the world celebrated environment day and stressed on the methods to protect our environment. However, very few are aware of this fact not only plastic and vehicles are destroying environment but also the cultivation of rice harms the natural environment in some ways. Rice being our staple food is consumed by more than 50% of world population. However, rice is one of the biggest emitters of methane gas and consumes a large portion of water, our natural resource.
Low Carbon Rice
Highlighting on the issue to reduce the stress on our natural resources Dev Garg, the Vice-President of Indian Rice Exporters Federation (IREF) appraised people about the new food technique known as “low carbon rice.” Dev Garg’s interview was focused on drastically reducing the emission of carbon during rice cultivation.
Dev Garg approached farmers to use techniques like Alternate Wetting & Drying (AWD), and Direct Seeding of Rice (DSR). Both the techniques, when applied results in lower consumption of methane and reduces water usage. Dev Garg further added that India being the largest exporter of rice need to be at the forefront of this mission and lead the way towards a greener environment. Dev Garg, the Vice President of Indian Rice Exporters Federation (IREF) highlighted the efforts of IREF in conducting a productive session with government and major stakeholders to enable farmers to adopt these alternatives.
