Karnataka is experiencing a good amount of rains in the pre-monsoon season which is greatly helping farmers in sowing. As per the data released this year pre-monsoon rains have been 149 percent more than normal, resulting into sowing of Kharif Crops before time. As per the latest data released by the state agriculture department, till 31st May, sowing of Kharif crop has been completed in 3.06 lakh hectares, which was only 2.36 lakh hectares previous year during the same period.
Above normal pre-monsoon rains in Karnataka have encouraged early sowing of major kharif crops such as maize, pulses, oilseeds and cash crops. Maize, a major kharif crop in Karnataka, has been sown in 0.714 lakh hectare till May 31, which is about 160% more than 0.274 lakh hectare in the same period last year. Jowar sowing has also increased to 0.147 lakh hectare (previous year: 0.129 lakh hectare). Total food grain area so far has reached 0.88 lakh hectare (previous year: 0.46 lakh hectare).
The department has set a target of 111.4 lakh tonnes of foodgrain production for Kharif 2025-26, which includes 96.14 lakh tonnes of cereals and 15.26 lakh tonnes of pulses. Pre monsoon rains can be helpful in increasing the quality and productivity of crops.
