Japan Continues to Face Rice Crisis Amidst Surge in Price

Japan Rice crisis seems to be a never-ending issue for rice consumers in Japan. Rice being the staple food in Japan seems to be putting continuous strain on both consumers and cultivators. The first paddy crop for 2025 has arrived in the local markets of Japan, however with a massive jump in the prices of rice. Despite of having strong demand for domestic brand of rice, prices are higher making it difficult for common people to meet their domestic needs and manage their food budget.

Japan Continues to Face Rice Crisis Amidst a Major Surge in Prices

The price for Koshihikari brand crop of Miyazaki province at a supermarket in western Tokyo was recorded at Rs 2,447 (4,190 Japanese Yen) for 5 kg without tax. It is 1,400 Yen (Rs. 817) more than last year. Price rise has been attributed to the increased sales of imported rice. However, Japanese people are preferring rice grown in their country over rice imported from abroad, even if it is expensive. A public relations officer of a supermarket chain reportedly said this after the increased rice prices in Japan.
