Indonesia Rice Production Achieves Record Self-Sufficiency with 5 million-Ton Surplus

Indonesia Rice Production has reached a major milestone in 2025, as the nation officially achieved rice self-sufficiency with a projected surplus of 4 to 5 million tons this year. Earlier, Agriculture Minister of Indonesia Andi Amran Sulaiman has announced that Indonesia will achieve rice self-sufficiency within 3 months. Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan announced this achievement highlighting Indonesia’s progress toward food security and agricultural sustainability. According to data released by Statistics Indonesia (BPS), total rice production in Indonesia between January and November 2025 is estimated to reach 33.19 million tons, marking a significant increase of 3.72 million tons, or approximately 12.62%, compared to the same period in 2024.

Govt. Plans to Expand Cultivation to Boost Indonesia Rice Production

To further strengthen Indonesia’s rice production capacity, the government is expanding cultivation through the development of 481 thousand hectares of new paddy fields in Merauke, South Papua. The initiative, part of the Wanam National Strategic Project (PSN), aims to accelerate national food and energy self-sufficiency. In this context, a contract has been signed between state-owned company PT Agrinas Pangan Nusantara and implementing partners.

Meanwhile, Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman expressed optimism that Indonesia would maintain rice self-sufficiency by December 2025 or early 2026, aligning with President Prabowo Subianto’s one-year target for achieving food independence. Record high growth in Indonesia rice production has been attributed to several key factors- including improved fertilizer distribution, upgraded irrigation systems, modernization of agricultural tools and machinery, streamlined regulations, and the accelerated development of new paddy fields nationwide.
