The agriculture ministry said on Wednesday that India’s rice production during the 2025-26 Kharif season that ended in October reached a record 124.5 million tonnes (mt), which was 1.7 MT more than the Kharif rice production last year. However, output of Pulses, oilseeds and cotton has been slightly decreased.
What does Agri Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan say about the Rice production during Kharif season?
Notably, the ministry’s first advance estimates of Kharif crops put the aggregate estimated foodgrain production for the 2025-26 season at nearly 173 MT, an increase from 169 MT a year earlier. Output Revisions figures are made during subsequent estimates when the actual crop cutting experiment yield data becomes available. Interestingly, the ministry releases four advance estimates before final production figures for a crop year. The Kharif crops sowing begins at the onset of monsoon in June, and harvest generally starts in October. The Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that heavy rainfall in some areas of the country affected crops; however, most areas have benefited significantly from a good monsoon, leading to overall good crop growth.
Besides Rice Production, Maize Production and Cotton Output Estimates
Maize Production is expected at 28 MT in 2025-26, an increase from around 25 MT last year. On the contrary, pulses production is estimated marginally lower at 7.4 MT compared to 7.7 MT in 2024-25. Likewise, oilseed output is expected at 27.5 MT, down from 28 MT last year. In addition, the cotton output is expected to be lower at 29.2 million bales (170 kg each) compared to 29.7 million bales a year earlier, whereas jute and mesta output is anticipated at 8.3 million bales (180 kg each), down from 8.4 million bales.
