Indian Spices, Tea Exporters Get Relief As Trump Reduces Tariffs

Several Sectors are facing the impact of US tariffs that came into effect from August 27. Amid this, Indian spices, tea exporters, and several processed foods are all about to benefit after US President Donald Trump lowered import duties on close to 200 agricultural and food products, as per a report. This move comes as the US administration is facing domestic pressure regarding rising prices. This list contains the products in which India has a strong export record, such as black pepper, cloves, cumin, cardamom, turmeric, ginger, mango-based products, and selected nuts like cashew.
Seafood and Basmati Rice outside from Exemption tariff list
According to a report, India has shipped around $500 million worth of spices to the US in 2024, where a tea and coffee exports were close to $83million. Notably,seafood like shrimp and basmati rice remain outside the exemption list. Not only this, high tariffs also continue on Indian jewellery, apparel, and gems until the two sides settle the significant issues. On the other side, the US is waiting for India to halt the Russian oil imports and to purchase US energy.
According to officials, the tariff relief will enhance India’s position in the market.
The rollback appeared through an executive order that US President Trump signed on Friday, a step that follows increasing voter frustration over inflation and affordability concerns. The concerns over rising prices contributed to republican losses in recent by elections. In addition, Trump explored distributing $2,000 rebate checks funded through tariff revenue, and ordered a review of the meatpacking industry over price spikes.
