India Signs 5-Year Rice Supply MoU with World Food Programme (WFP)

India has reinforced its role in global food security by signing a five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the World Food Programme (WFP) to supply rice for international humanitarian operations.

Under this agreement, the Food Corporation of India (FCI) will supply 200,000 metric tonnes of rice over five years to help vulnerable populations affected by hunger and food insecurity. The MoU includes an extension clause, and pricing will be determined annually by mutual agreement. Currently, the price is set at INR 2,800 per quintal, valid until March 31, 2026. The MoU was signed by FCI Chairman Ravindra Kumar Agrawal and WFP Deputy Executive Director Carl Skau, in the presence of Sanjeev Chopra, Secretary of the Department of Food and Public Distribution.

Strengthening India’s Role in Global Humanitarian Efforts

Officials described the MoU as a reflection of India’s growing contribution to global food security. Secretary Sanjeev Chopra said, “Through this collaboration with WFP, India aims to provide hope, nutrition, and dignity to communities affected by hunger around the world.” WFP Deputy Executive Director Carl Skau added that India’s support will help WFP deliver nutritious food more effectively to vulnerable populations over the next five years, reinforcing global initiatives like the Zero Hunger goal.

ndia currently holds substantial foodgrain reserves, with 63 million tonnes of rice stock as of January 2026. This surplus reflects India’s robust agricultural production capacity and a strong national food security framework.
