India Must Lead Global Organic Rice Market, Say Experts at BIRC 2025

Bharat International Rice Conference (BIRC) 2025 has so far gathered stakeholders from across the globe, allowing them to share their queries, and raise their concerns on issues related to rice ecosystem under one platform. In one such attempt, the second day of the world’s largest rice event witnessed a dedicated session on “Organic Rice and Rice Products highlighting the growing significance of sustainable and eco-friendly rice cultivation in India’s agri-export landscape.

The discussion was moderated by Ms. Saswati Bose, General Manager, APEDA, and chaired by Shri Abhishek Dev, Chairman, APEDA. The panel brought together experts from the agricultural and export sectors who emphasized the immense potential of India’s organic rice varieties — including traditional gems like Gobindobhog rice — in global markets.

Need to Ensure the Authenticity of Organic Rice

Speakers underscored the importance of traceability, quality certification, and farmer awareness to ensure the authenticity and premium value of Indian organic rice. The session focused on creating stronger linkages between farmers, processors, and exporters to build a consistent supply chain that meets international standards. To enhance India’s organic rice exports, the panel recommended:

  • Strengthening farmer clusters and training them in organic certification processes.
  • Promoting indigenous rice varieties with geographical indications (GI tags).
  • Encouraging digital traceability systems to ensure product transparency.
  • Expanding international market outreach through APEDA-led trade fairs and buyer-seller meets.
  • Developing brand identity for Indian organic rice to capture premium markets in Europe, the Middle East, and East Asia.

The session concluded with a shared vision of positioning India as a global leader in organic rice, aligning agricultural growth with sustainability and consumer health priorities worldwide.
