India has surpassed China. Amidst trade uncertainties, India overtakes China by shipping 3.3 million iPhones to the US, marking a 76% year-on-year increase. The data was released by Omdia, a market research firm. China could only export 900,000 units, which was 37,00,000last year, marking a drastic figure of 76% decline. With this India, for the first time, becomes top iPhone exporter to US leaving behind China.
The shift can be attributed to heightened trade tensions and the reintroduction of steep tariffs on Chinese imports under former US President Donald Trump. Chinese-made iPhones currently face a 30% import duty, compared to a base 10% tariff on those assembled in India.
US President Donald Trump had warned Apple that if it manufactures iPhones anywhere, including India, it will have to pay a tariff of 25 per cent. However, Apple CEO Tim Cook has clearly stated that most of the iPhones sold in the US during the June quarter will be manufactured in India.
