India Canada Trade Deal Could Guarantee Long-Term Pulse Purchases

In a major boost to strengthen India Canada trade ties, India’s government is considering guaranteeing Canada ongoing pulse crop sales. Indian High Commissioner to Canada Dinesh Patnaik, during his visit to Saskatchewan, said that India will continue to fulfil India pulses need from Canada, so its farmers keep growing the vital protein source. India Canada top leaders have agreed to restart negotiations for trade relations as diplomatic relations between the two nations thaw under Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney.

India Canada Trade Talks on Pulses

Notably, Canada is a major global supplier of lentils to India, competing with Australia to gain the top position in the Indian commodity market. Further, Canada is also a top supplier of peas, along with Russia. Keeping Indian agri trade in mind, India effective from November 1, imposed a 30% import duty on all yellow peas. Talking about the terms of trade talks and negotiations, Patnaik said that both the Canadian and Indian governments are having discussion on "whether we can have a quota, whether we can have a lesser tariff, whether we can have a different system of how we can make sure that in the long run pulses from Canada go regularly to India."

Canadian farmers during an agri show have said they might not grow peas in 2026 due to China's 100% duties on Canadian peas and India's recently pulse imports duty. Those are two of Canada's three biggest pea markets, with the U.S. the third, and many farmers say these tariff rates will make the crop unprofitable for them, so they are likely to plant other crops instead. However, after India Canada Uranium deal, India is now looking to seal the deal with India for pulses imports as well.

Where does India import pulses from?   

India imports pulses from several countries, with top suppliers including Canada, Australia, Russia, Myanmar, and Mozambique. Canada meets the significant portion of India’s pulse imports need, whereas Russia and Turkey being the major supplier of yellow peas and lentils.
