Maharashtra is facing the wrath of unseasonal rains that devastated standing crops. Heavy pre-Monsson rains in Maharashtra have caused substantial losses to onion farmers across the state. Following the rains, retail prices of Onion are running at Rs 30 to Rs 40 per kg. The retail prices of onions that do not get spoiled due to moisture have increased by about Rs 10 per kg. The arrival of onions in the markets has also decreased due to the heavy rains.
The average price of onion has increased by about 20 percent from Rs 11.50 per kg on May 15 to Rs 14 per kg on May 31. Traders speculated that these reasons might affect the retail prices of onion, and it reach Rs 50 per kg in the next one month. Maharashtra is the largest producer of onion in the country. Nasik in Maharashtra is known for onion export across the world including India.
With the monsoon approaching, local farmers fear further rain could ruin the little produce that remains.
