On Monday, November 25, the government asked Hotels and restaurants to source produce directly from Farmer-Producer Organisations (FPOs). This aims to strengthen the farmers’ income by cutting out middlemen from the supply chain.
While addressing the gathering at the event that was organized by the Hotel and restaurant Association of Northern India and Agriculture Ministry, Agriculture Secretary Devesh Chaturvedi stressed the benefits of explicit and direct partnerships between the hospitality sector and local farmers.
Apart urge to discard middlemen, Agri Sec encourage promoting GI
Chaturvedi said: “we have a large number of hotels and restaurants in the country. And if You are able to develop a partnership with the local farming community to get authentic food, vegetables, spices and other things, then it will be a win-win situation”. Not only this, he encouraged the hotels to promote Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged products to improve the dining experience for tourists. India has various registered GI food products beyond Basmati rice, such as vegetables, Fruits, grains and processed foods.
Federation to Publish a Booklet
Interestingly, the Federation of Hotel and Restaurant Associations of India announced plans to publish a booklet listing Farmer-Producer Organisations (FPOs) with their products and contact details, and to establish a cell to facilitate direct connections between hotels and FPOs. In this event, several Hotel industry leaders are presented, including Vishavpreet Singh Cheema, President of Lemon Tree Hotels: Ajay Bakaya, MD of Sarovar Hotels and Rahool Macrius, market managing director of Wyndham Hotels and resorts.
