The state government has launched several initiatives aimed at promoting onion cultivation and storage. These efforts are intended to increase farmers’ income and reduce post-harvest losses.

75% Subsidy for Building Onion Storage Units
The Bihar government has announced a 75% subsidy for the construction of onion storage units. Under this scheme, the estimated cost of constructing a 50 metric ton storage unit is around ₹6 lakh, of which ₹4.5 lakh will be covered by the government. This scheme is being implemented in 23 districts across the state, and farmers can apply online at horticulture.bihar.gov.in.
75% Grant for Kharif Onion Cultivation
To promote Kharif onion cultivation, the government is also offering a 75% grant—₹18,375 out of a total ₹24,500 per hectare. Farmers with landholdings between 0.25 to 5 acres are eligible to apply for this benefit.
Adoption of Improved Varieties and Technologies
Farmers are being encouraged to use improved varieties such as ‘Pusa Shobha’, which offers better quality and longer shelf life. Additionally, drone technology is being employed for spraying fertilizers and pesticides, which helps increase productivity while reducing costs.
Government Initiatives Increasing Farmers’ Income
Thanks to these schemes and technologies, many farmers in Bihar are seeing significant improvements in their income. For instance, some farmers have reported earning up to ₹1 lakh per acre through onion cultivation under these initiatives.
